Free Edits Download: Get the Official App for Free (2026)

Edits is free. You do not pay to download it, you do not pay a monthly fee to edit with it, and you do not pay to export a finished Reel. That is the whole point of this page: if a website is charging you for a “free Edits download”, it is selling you something you can get for nothing from the official stores, or worse, it is selling you a fake.

30-second answer: Get Edits free from the official Google Play or App Store listing. On a PC or Mac, run that same free app inside a free Android emulator. Never pay for a download file, an activation code, or a “premium” version — those are not sold by Instagram and are a common way to spread repacked or malicious apps.

What “free” really means for Edits

Instagram Edits is a free video editor. There is no paid tier, no subscription screen, and no export fee. You open the app, sign in with an Instagram account, edit on a multi-track timeline, add captions, music and effects, and export a finished video in 1080 × 1920 with no watermark. That is the complete product, and it costs nothing.

The catch is not in the app; it is in the search results around it. Because Edits is popular, scammers build pages that dress up a paid file as a bargain: “Edits Pro download”, “Edits premium unlocked”, “Edits for PC installer — $4.99”. None of those exist as official products. Instagram does not sell Edits, does not sell a desktop installer, and does not sell a premium unlock. Paying for one buys you either nothing, a repacked copy of the free app, or a file you should not run.

The only honest costs around Edits are the ones you already own: a phone or computer that can run it, and an internet connection for downloading and signing in. On a desktop, the route is an emulator, and the good emulators are free too — see our PC guide and Mac guide for the full setup.

Get Edits free on Android

Open the Google Play Store on your phone and search for “Edits”. The listing you want is called “Edits: Video Editor”, the developer reads Instagram, and it shows more than 100 million downloads. Tap Install. The button should say Install or Get, never a price — if it shows a price, you are looking at a different app with a similar name.

Before you open it, check two things: that the developer is Instagram, and that your phone has around 1 GB of free space for the app and a first test project. Sign in with your Instagram account and you are editing within minutes. The full walkthrough, including what to do when Play says the app is unavailable for your device, is on our Edits app guide.

If your phone has no Play Store at all, the only other route worth considering is a reputable APK archive. That is a different process with real risks, so read our APK guide first and verify the publisher (Instagram, Inc.) and the package name (com.instagram.basel) before you install anything.

Get Edits free on iPhone

Open the App Store, search for “Edits”, and look for “Edits: Video Editor” with the seller listed as Instagram, Inc. The button should say Get, not a price. The app needs iOS 16.3 or later, so on a very old iPhone you may need to update iOS first — the App Store will tell you if your version is too old.

There is no APK or sideloaded route on iPhone, and any site offering an “Edits IPA” or a paid iPhone installer is not offering the real app. If the App Store listing is not available in your region, the honest answer is to wait for regional availability rather than trust a third-party file with your Instagram login.

Get Edits free on a PC or Mac

There is no desktop version of Edits to download, free or paid, so any site charging for a Windows or Mac installer is selling a fake. The real free route is an Android emulator: a free program that runs Android apps on your computer. BlueStacks, LDPlayer, NoxPlayer and MEmu all have free tiers that are more than enough for Edits, and you then install the official Edits app from the Play Store inside the emulator, exactly as you would on a phone.

Some emulators offer optional paid tiers with extra features, but you do not need them to run Edits. Follow our PC guide or Mac guide for the full setup, and see our desktop availability page for what works on each machine. Be especially wary of sites selling a “web version” of Edits — there is no official web editor, and those pages usually exist to collect logins or card details.

What you get for free

Everything that makes Edits useful is in the free app. The multi-track timeline, trimming and splitting, captions and text titles, music and voiceover, transitions, filters and effects, and export at 1080 × 1920 are all included, with no watermark on the finished video. There is no “export in high quality” upsell and no limit on how many projects you can start.

The costs around Edits are the costs of making videos, not of the app: a phone with enough storage, a tripod or microphone if you want better footage, and your time. If a page claims a feature is locked behind a payment, compare it against the official listing — the feature is either already in the free app or it does not exist.

What you should never pay for

  • A download file. Edits comes from the Play Store or App Store, never from a checkout page.
  • An activation or licence code. Edits has no licence keys; a code is a made-up product.
  • A “Pro”, “premium” or “unlocked” version. There is no paid tier to unlock.
  • Watermark removal. The free app already exports without a watermark.
  • A Windows or Mac installer. No desktop version exists, so no installer can be genuine.
  • Early access. Edits is publicly available; nobody can sell you a head start.

If you already paid for one of these, uninstall the file, run a malware scan on the device, and change your Instagram password from the official app or website. If you entered card details, contact your bank about the charge. Then install the real app from the official store and start over — your account and projects in the genuine app are unaffected.

Free Edits vs paid clones

Use this table when a listing looks tempting. The genuine app wins on every row that matters, and it costs nothing.

Official Edits appPaid clone or repack
PriceFreePaid, often with repeat charges
PublisherInstagram, Inc.Unknown or impersonated
WatermarkNone on exportsOften added, removal sold separately
Sign-inYour Instagram accountMay harvest your login
UpdatesAutomatic from the storeNone, or pushed as new paid files

Make your first free edit

Once the official app is installed, prove to yourself that it is the real thing with a five-minute test. Sign in with your Instagram account, start a new project, and import one short clip from your camera roll. Trim the first two seconds, add one caption, then export at 1080 x 1920. If the export finishes with no watermark and no payment screen, you have the genuine free app.

Save that test project. It becomes your reference: if a future update ever asks for payment or shows a watermark, compare it against this first export and you will know immediately that something changed for the worse. Keep the app updated from the store and you will keep getting new features the same way, free.

Troubleshooting

  • The store shows a price. You are looking at a clone. Search again for the listing by Instagram, or open it from the official links at the end of this page.
  • The app asks for payment after install. Uninstall it immediately. The real Edits never asks for payment, so anything that does is not the real app.
  • Play says the app is unavailable. Your device or region may not be supported yet. Do not buy an APK from a random site to get around this; check the store again later or use a device that is supported.
  • A site wants your Instagram password. Never type it anywhere except the official Instagram app or website. A download page has no legitimate reason to ask for it.
  • Exports have a watermark. The official app does not add one. A watermark means the video came from a different editor, so check which app actually exported it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Edits really free?

Yes. Edits is free to download, free to edit with, and free to export from. There is no paid tier, no subscription, and no watermark on exports.

Is there a free Edits download for PC?

There is no official desktop version of Edits, free or paid. On a PC or Mac, run the free mobile app inside a free Android emulator such as BlueStacks.

Why does a website charge for an Edits download?

It should not. Edits is free from the official stores, so a site charging for a download is selling a fake, a repack, or nothing at all.

Is a free Edits APK safe?

Only from a reputable archive such as APKMirror or APKPure, and only after verifying the publisher is Instagram, Inc. and the package name is com.instagram.basel. Random APK sites are not safe.

Does the free version add a watermark?

No. Exports from the official free app carry no watermark. If your video has one, it came from a different editor.

Do I need to pay to export in high quality?

No. Export at 1080 x 1920 is included free, with no payment screen and no quality upsell.

Edits for PC is an independent, unofficial guide. It is not affiliated with Meta Platforms, Inc. or Instagram, and it does not host or sell the Edits app.
